CREATING CHANGE: WORLD FIRST BAMBOO RAZOR - oceans asia

In July typhoon ‘Vincente’ hit Hong Kong hard. The now infamous pellet spill saw us spending three months on Hong Kong beaches cleaning them up. Alongside us daily was a dear friend Stella Phillips. Stella and her husband Nigel have been close family friends for many years. Nigel Phillips has his own company, Global Strategic Alliance (GSA HK) that manufactures system razor blade handles and disposable razor blades for most of the high street names.

One morning towards the end of the pellet spill we had a meeting with Nigel to discuss possible alternatives to plastic for his razor handles. We got onto the subject of bamboo and the seed was planted. GSA HK started looking into possibilities and began R&D with their factories in China. Several years went by and behind the scenes the GSA HK team were still working hard on the bamboo razors concept. There were many versions; some of the earliest were almost comical which we dubbed “The Flintstones Razor”.

With the issue of single use plastic now firmly in the world’s media thanks to movies like ‘A Plastic Ocean’ and Sir David Attenborough’s ‘Blue Planet 2’ and SKY TV’s Ocean Rescue, the world is looking for innovative business leaders to get creative and help reduce our plastic addiction.

Last year GSA HK proudly showed us their System Razor Handle (not the disposable single use).

The Holy Grail however is the single use disposable razors, the kind that you find in hotel rooms or complimentary vanity kits. These proved harder to manufacture without any plastic holding the blades in place.

This week GSA HK called and showed me the worlds first completely plastic free, Bamboo Disposable Razor. They have meetings scheduled with many of the big companies and my prediction is that they will be snapped up. Europe for example will ban all single use plastic by , substitutes need to be found and as we have seen here, substitutes take time to bring to market.

Thank you GSA HK for being so open and listening, changing the world one shave at a time. GSA HK have always supported our work against plastic pollution and with our newly established OceansAsia we look forward to future projects together.

Review Bamboo Safety Razor by Emma Wouterson

The usual razors are quite expensive. They also bring a lot of plastic packaging with them. I think both are not necessary. That’s why I started looking for an alternative. I wanted a good quality razor that is sustainably produced, lasts a long time and minimizes pollution. I found it, a Safety Razor! How does it work? Is the money worth it? Does shaving hurt? I share my review about the bamboo safety razor in this article!

SAFETY RAZOR IS MORE SUSTAINABLE

I don’t buy much, but when I buy something, I make sure that it can last a lifetime. Or at least as long as possible. It is important to me that the products I buy are of good quality and produced sustainably. I don’t mind paying a little more as I often only have to buy it once. In the end you are just as expensive, or even cheaper! Better for me, better for the environment

For this reason I chose a safety razor. In the Netherlands it is also called a “Krabbertje”. The nice thing is that a safety razor is now very hip, but was invented in by an American. The safety razor is therefore a super authentic razor. Something I like!

How it works, whether it hurts and how much it costs I tell in this review about the bamboo safety razor!

HOW DOES A SAFETY RAZOR WORK?

HOW DO YOU PUT THE KNIFE TOGETHER?

1. Hold the top of the safety razor upside down between your thumb and index finger.

2. Pick up the knife on the short, non-sharp side and place it on the top.

3. Place the bottom with the rounded side on the knife.

4. Tighten the handle firmly, but not too tight, against the loose parts.

5. The blade is ready for use!

SHAVING SOAP

I personally don’t use shaving soap, just a soap bar. There are shaving soap blocks that do not bring plastic and last a long time.

  • HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

There are different safety razors. My safety razor comes from the brand Bambaw and I bought it at Plastic Free Amsterdam online for €22,95. This handle is made of bamboo and will last a lifetime as long as you handle it well. So it is a one-off edition.

  • Metal Safety Razor Rose Gold
  • Metal Safety Razor Black
  • The blades can be found for 30 cents each. They are often sold in sets of 5. They say that a knife will last a month, but I still use the 1st knife now. So for almost 3 months!

So, in the end, you are much cheaper with a safety razor than with a normal plastic razor.
