Tips for Protecting Your Car's Exterior - TrueCar Blog

The Urban Jungle can be a dangerous environment for your car, particularly if you’re regularly street parking. Even with the advent of parking sensors and exterior cameras, “bump parking” is still a thing (whether on purpose or accident), so using bumper guards is a smart way to help protect your car’s exterior against dings, dents, and scratches.

If you want to learn more, please visit our website Bumper Protector For Suv.

A common type of rear bumper guard is a deployable, apron-style mat that’s typically made from rubber or heavy foam. These types of bumper guards are generally universal fit and are held in place with a few straps that don’t require tools to install. When not needed, they can be easily removed and stowed in your trunk. Apron-style rear bumper guards protect best against lighter impacts that can cause dings or scratches; more severe shunts can still dent or crack your bumper. Still, they’re a worthwhile form of bumper protection that can be found online or in your local auto parts store in the $30-$50 range.

If your vehicle is equipped with a trailer hitch, a hitch step is another option for rear bumper protection. Hitch steps, also known as receiver steps, attach to your vehicle’s receiver hitch and protrude a few inches from the rear bumper, providing protection if there’s contact with another vehicle. In addition to serving as a bumper protectant, hitch steps also act as a foothold, allowing for easier access to a truck bed or rooftop-storage. However, hitch steps only protect the center section of your rear bumper, leaving the corners vulnerable to damage. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $100 for a hitch step, depending on the brand and style.

If you frequently load things into your trunk, you should also consider a protective strip for the top edge of your rear bumper. These adhesive-backed universal strips stick to the threshold between your bumper and trunk, providing scratch protection against wayward objects, such as heavy luggage.

To protect your front bumper, consider a license plate guard, which is made from thick rubber and attaches via your vehicle’s front license plate hardware. These types of protective license plate frames do a good job at absorbing light taps but, like hitch steps, only offer protection for the center of your bumper.

Paint protectant film, or PPF for short, is an effective tool to protect your vehicle’s paint from rock chips, scratches, and other kinds of light damage. PPF is a clear vinyl wrap that can be applied to specific areas of your car that are susceptible to damage, such as the leading edge of the hood or directly behind the wheels, or to the entire bodywork for maximum protection. If a quality PPF is properly maintained, it can last 5-10 years before showing signs of degradation.

PPF application is best left to the professionals, and it’s not the cheapest way to protect your paint. For partial coverage expect to shell out a few hundred bucks, with a full-body wrap running into the thousands of dollars. That’s still less expensive than a full respray, though.
